We Are...
While remembering the good, it is but a common refrain to lament about the despicable state of affairs in India, its numbing poverty, its "Apply-Apply-No-Reply" unemployment, its overburdened people, its omnipresent corruption...and the list goes on. So one day, while in the midst of a similar natured discussion, it struck us that we should do more than just arm-chair talk and chip in our bit to help India however we can, to instrument whatever little change we can, to influence whatever small things we could. In such a moment Ekjut was born. The word Ekjut means "together" and in it's name lies the essence of our effort. Ekjut endeavors to provide an effective channel for all those well meaning people out there who want to pitch in their contribution for the betterment of India. The contribution may be in terms of time, labor, ideas or monetary assistance. At Ekjut, we identify worthy social projects in India to work with and then, if possible, we either involve our group of members, friends and family in India, or we look for NGOs/NPOs who are already actively engaged in that location and field and collaborate with them to realize the project's endeavor. We at Ekjut realize the importance of an "effort-together" approach towards combating the many social problems in India. The ills of India today do not halt at the poor but encompass all of us at some level or the other. Often,
sitting here away from home in India, it's a common indulgence to get
nostalgic about our country of birth, to relive our memories, both big
and small, good and bad, recent and far away. It is a common discussion
to talk about the state of affairs in India, its resilient people, its
fixation for cricket, its love for spices, its liking for street-side
"kachori", its shrewd politics and the mind-numbing
scams, its ethnic diversity, its pluralistic community, its (now diminishing)
secular nature, and its massive impoverishment.
