Ekjut Children Home
The
reality of the street child is the naked and vicious face of poverty,
sickness and exploitation. The tragedy is, that those who bear it are
themselves innocent, lonely and frightened young children. The prime
need of such children is that of care and security, and a feeling of
being wanted. The Ekjut Children Home at Bhopal is an endeavor
to provide a home to such children - a place where they are loved and
cared for and are given a chance to grow up into independent, mature
and responsible adults.

Bridging
The Gap...
The
riverine (island) areas of South Sunderban in West Bengal have been
in a state of neglect for decades. With no local rural health centers
in place, in the event of a medical emergency, the locals have to travel
to the closest hospital, which is 3 1/2 hours by boat and another hour
by foot. All boats leave Baikunthapur in the morning, and in the event
of a medical emergency later in the day, a special boat needs to be
hired. The boat hiring charges are about Rs.600-700 and often force
the poor desperate villagers to borrow from the local "loan
sharks" at very high interest rates and heavy collateral. And
thus starts a vicious circle of dependence and exploitation. Ekjut
has joined hands with Baikunthapur Tarun Sangha (BTS),
a small grass-root level social action group fighting for the rehabilitation
of these people, and is sponsoring the boat-hiring charges for the villagers
in the event of a medical emergency evacuation to the nearest hospital.

HEAL - Heal a Life...
Today,
adequate health care exists only in the realm of the rich, with the
poor left haplessly to fend for themselves. Taking cognizance of this,
Ekjut has involved itself in sponsoring medical treatment and
surgery for some of the needy patients at Rajindra Government Hospital,
Patiala (Punjab). Most of these patients are from extremely poor
strata of the society and are unable to afford even food for themselves,
leave alone hospital costs and exorbitant expenses of surgery and medicines.

Blood Databank
It's
sad to hear that someone died due to unavailability of donor blood - to
know that a life was lost which needn't have been. Lack of a
comprehensive nationwide blood database, coupled with a general
lackadaisical approach of people towards donating blood has resulted in
numerous lives being lost. Having witnessed an acquaintance pass away
because of want of blood, coupled with deep personal tragedy - the loss
of their child, the husband & wife duo, Khushroo & Fermin
Poacha, understood the value of saving a life. Their efforts &
motivation to change things culminated in the realization of an online
blood databank IndianBloodDonors.com.
This excellent effort on the part of Mr. & Mrs. Poacha has since
saved many lives, and Ekjut has supported them by taking up a
part of the website maintenance costs.

Aid - Gujarat Quake
The
country's tryst with destiny on the Republic Day of 26th
January 2001 got off on the wrong note, with a very severe earthquake,
epi-centered near Bhuj, Gujarat. The devastation and havoc caused by
the earthquake is known all too well. In a quick move following the
earthquake, Ekjut gathered funds from within its member community
and used it to purchase medical relief supplies including bandages and
other orthopedic equipment. These medical supplies were then dispatched
to some of the worst-hit areas in Gujarat through a team of doctors
from Rajindra Government Hospital in Patiala (Punjab). A total
of $450 was collected and utilized within the first few days after the
earthquake when the relief requirements were most.
