HEAL - Heal A Life

Healthcare is one of the most basic requirements that every human should have access to, irrespective of their economic situation. And while the Government of India has established numerous hospitals and healthcare institutions all over the Country with this very aim in mind, the effort either still falls short, or for some reason or the other, the care does not percolate down to the neediest. Taking cognizance of this, Ekjut decided to sponsor the surgery and medical treatment of some of the needy patients at Government Medical Hospital, Anandpur Sahib (Punjab) (Ekjut has also supported a similar effort at Rajindra Government Medical Hospital at Patiala in the past).

Most of these patients are from extremely poor strata of the society and are unable to afford even food for themselves, leave alone hospital costs and exorbitant expenses of surgery and medicines. Ekjut is helped in this endeavor by Dr. Raminder Singh (MD) who works in the hospital tirelessly on this effort and personally supervises procurement and dispensation of all medical help.

Wherever possible, Ekjut also tries to pick up incidental costs of treatment like those associated with travel and food while the patient is undergoing treatment.

Meet some of the patients who have benefited through this project...

Chinde Ram: Chinde Ram is a laborer by profession who met with an accident in 1997 in which the bones in his right leg were fractured. He was operated upon the same day in the Emergency  Room at Rajindra Hospital and his right tibia was fixed using a "kuntcher nail". The wound was infected and it required constant change of dressings which also were attended to by the ward. However, Chinde Ram was misled that he hadn't been receiving the best treatment, and so after a month he took a discharge from the hospital against medical advice and consulted a private practitioner outside the hospital.

This 'honorable' doctor kept Chinde Ram admitted to his hospital for a complete year under the guise of treatment and the expenditure forced Chinde Ram to sell all his assets and agricultural land. The practitioner removed the "kuntcher nail" and diagnosed Chinde Ram to be suffering from "chronic osteomyelitis with non union left tibia". After losing all he owned and having only worsened in physical health, Chinde Ram left the hospital and lived the next few years in suffering.

Chinde Ram then decided to come again to Rajindra Hospital where the doctors decided to re-operate on his leg and used an "Illezeroy fixator" to his diseased tibia. This surgery usually needs about Rs.10,000 in a government hospital (about Rs.50,000 in a private hospital), however Mr. Rakesh Goyal helped Dr. Raminder Singh to procure a previously used external fixator for Rs.4,500 only. Chinde Ram is now able to walk again and is very happy with his improved condition.

Mahesh Kumar: Mahesh Kumar is a worker in a small scale industry at Mandi Gobindgarh. He met with an accident and was admitted to Rajindra Hospital with a diagnosis of "Degloving injury to the left lower limb". He received dressings for two months till his wound was non-infective and operable upon for plastic surgery. However Mahesh Kumar had no money for the involved medicinal costs. Dr. Raminder procured medicines from Mr. Rakesh Goyal, a wholesale chemist owner who provided them on a no-profit basis. The surgery was successful and Mahesh Kumar has fully recovered and is now back at his work.

Ghazi Khan: Ghazi Khan is a goat-herder from Himachal Pradesh who suffers from "tuberculosis of the left knee joint". He visits Rajindra hospital every two months when a few generous people from his village arrange the bus fare for him. He has too meager resources to even arrange for his food, leave alone money required for purchasing medicines and other costs of staying in the hospital. Though the government tuberculosis hospitals do provide the drugs free of charge, this supply is too erratic and insufficient. Since Ghazi Khan had to spend Rs.140 for every visit to the hospital just in bus fare, Dr. Raminder Singh procured and provided him with medicines in bulk. Ghazi Khan's condition has improved significantly now.
