Ekjut Children Home

The Ekjut Children Home at Bhopal is an endeavor to bring a change in the lives of children living in squalor conditions on the streets of Bhopal & Indore (Madhya Pradesh). Started in Jan 2003 with the help of a few street children, the project is coordinated and led by Umesh Dixit in Bhopal. Under this project, Ekjut has rented out a small living space and has transformed it into a shelter facility for the children where they live together along with the live-in caretaker.

The project endeavors to provide a home to these children where they can lead a semblance of normal life, a place where they can go back to at the end of the day...a place that can provide them with a steadfast today and help improve their tomorrow, give them a sense of security, teach them how to share and co-exist, allow them to make mistakes and learn from them...a place that they can call their own and take pride in.

Apart from fulfilling the emotional needs of the children, the objective of the project is also to make these children independent and self-sufficient by providing them education, guidance and vocational training.

Come meet the children...

Depending on the age and the capability of the child, the following opportunities are provided to the children...

  Formal Education
The children are enrolled in a local school where they go through the regular educational curriculum.

  Non-formal Education & Vocational Training
This is a combination of non-formal education and vocational training. Depending on their interest and capability, the children are trained in a vocation as well as being imparted formal education and are encouraged to appear for private exams.

As part of the vocational training program, the children may be trained on one (or more) of the following trades, depending upon individual interest and capability:

  Tailoring
  Zari & embroidery work
  Nursing
  Papier-mâché work
  Terracotta work

  Jute work
  Plumbing
  Carpentry
  TV/refrigerator repair work
  Electrical repair work

The shelter is currently home to twenty one children in the age group 3-14 years and shall be adding new children to its folds every six months or so. Over time, it is envisaged that the children shall assist the project in reaching partial self-sustainability by practicing their vocation and generating income. This would also serve to make the children feel capable of sustaining themselves - instilling in them the sense of self-worth and esteem.
